I have been asked on several occasions for the significance of my theme. Why did I choose oak trees? The oak is a timeless symbol of strength and endurance, of hope, and of overcoming obstacles. An oak tree in Lewisburg, Louisiana named the "Seven Sisters" (named after a family containing seven sisters, and not due to the tree itself) has been estimated to have been alive for over 1,200 years. Oaks are also amazingly resistant to fire - the occasional forest fire is known to help oaks grow and thrive by clearing out the underbrush, and allowing roots to expand and acorns to give birth to new trees. The finest wines and bourbons are aged in oak barrels. Oak holds a strong cultural significance to Celtic mythology, was considered a symbol of Zeus, and is mentioned many times in Judeo-Christian doctrine. It’s no wonder it’s been chosen as the national tree of England, Estonia, France, Germany, Lithuania, Poland, the United States, and Wales. After all, no one ever mentions a “mighty maple”.
